The Issues

Kudoz.ca is an organization that has been helping people with cognitive disabilities (Kudoers) to expand their experience with learning.

There has been an app for Kudoers to help them reflect on their experience learning with the hosts. Kudoz realizes that there is a need for hosts to have their app too.

You can read more about this case study on Medium

I interviewed 6 hosts that are using Kudoz, and I also conducted a contextual inquiry being a host. These are my main findings:

BECAUSE KUDOZ IS BASED ON WEBSITE...

  • Users experience issue with device-jumping.

  • Users can't receive any notification about incoming mails and activities on time.

  • Users forget to give feedback to the Kudoz team.

These are the problems we are going to solve. Put that in mind, we set out to learn more about our users.

PERSONA & STORYBOARD

This our persona Nancy Stone. And this is the storyboard I drew:

01. Nancy is a host on Kudoz.ca, she teaches kudoers how to bake.

01. Nancy is a host on Kudoz.ca, she teaches kudoers how to bake.

03. Sometimes when the appointment was made month ago, she forgets about it.

03. Sometimes when the appointment was made month ago, she forgets about it.

02. She has to log in on computer to check the appointment, and use her phone to manage her calendar, and check the message on computer, then answer the phone from kudoz team to give feedback...... It's so confusing!

02. She has to log in on computer to check the appointment, and use her phone to manage her calendar, and check the message on computer, then answer the phone from kudoz team to give feedback...... It's so confusing!

04. Then she learns about kudoz app for hosts.

04. Then she learns about kudoz app for hosts.

Now she can manage her kudoz activities with only one device, and optimize the learning experience for the kudoers.

Now she can manage her kudoz activities with only one device, and optimize the learning experience for the kudoers.

With persona and storyboards, I clarified what features can solve the difficulties our users encounter. Then we moved to designing.

LOW-FIDELITY WIREFRAMES

After rounds of design studio, we came up with our wireframes:

I was responsible for designing experience pages and profile pages in different status.

I also designed feedback interface right after the experience that enables people to recall their memories about the experience according to the photos they took during the event.

The badge system and the "trophy room" are elements of gamification. It encourages users to visit the app more often. The sense of completion and collection provides satisfying experience.

I worked with UI designers with hi-fi screens. I made some iterations after doing usability tests.

SUMMARY

This project is very emotional.

As we talked to many hosts who volunteered to help kudoers with their all hearts, they have been very active participating in our research and giving feedback. They believe this app will improve their experience and benefit the kudoers.
